New-look Bridgewater Service Centre

The Bridgewater community will benefit from improved access to Centrelink and Medicare services, with the opening of the new-look Services Australia Bridgewater Service Centre this week. Minister for Government Services the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC said the service centre at Green Point Road is the first in Tasmania to offer upgraded self-service facilities and digital support. ‘The Bridgewater Service Centre is offering appointment-based Centrelink services so customers can skip the [...]

After two months of restrictions, which have presented the biggest challenges to our social structures and our economy since World War II, it's understandable that getting back to normal, to the way things were before COVID-19, is the immediate aim for many. However, we must acknowledge that COVID-19 will change the economy and the way we live permanently, and, as a nation, we must look for the opportunity in these [...]

ADJOURNMENT – National Security

Terrorism and how we keep Australians safe from terrorists is once again in the headlines this week with recent comments from the ASIO director-general that the terrorist threat remains unacceptably high. That important reminder comes as, in this country, we are facing the imminent release of eight convicted terrorists from prison. Surely when it comes to convicted terrorists, people who want to kill and injure as many Australians as they [...]

I welcome the opportunity this evening to speak on this matter of public importance. The bushfires which have affected so many Australians and so much of Australia have been a tragedy in so many ways. The loss of life, the loss of people's homes, the loss of wildlife and the damage to the environment are all devastating aspects of this bushfire season. This matter that we're discussing tonight, put forward [...]

ADJOURNMENT – Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman steps down

Last month the Tasmanian Liberal Party leader and Premier, Will Hodgman, stepped down from his respective positions after nearly 18 years serving in the Tasmanian parliament. Will Hodgman has been a stalwart in the seat of Franklin in the state's south for close to two decades, having first been elected to the parliament in 2002. In 2006, he was elected leader of the Tasmanian Parliamentary Liberal Party and in 2014 [...]

CONDOLENCES – Australian Bushfires

Tonight I rise to join members of this parliament in paying my respects to all of those Australians who have been impacted by the devastating bushfires that have burned through so much of our country over the past few months. A number of Australians have lost their lives. This is an absolute tragedy first and foremost for their families but also for the local communities that these families come from [...]

ADJOURNMENT – Timber Industry

Tasmanians know better than anyone what happens when the Labor Party decides inner-city green votes are more important than timber workers. In 2010, the Tasmanian Labor Party formed government with the Tasmanian Greens and set about implementing the Greens' No. 1 policy priority: to destroy the Tasmanian timber industry. The result was an industry decimated, with two in every three forestry jobs gone. Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars were [...]

MATTERS OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE – Girls Takeover Parliament

As the youngest woman in this Australian parliament, I would like to extend my support for the Girls Takeover Parliament program, an organisation that aims to encourage young women to become more politically engaged and to provide a pathway for them to pursue a career in politics. The Takeover enables young women to make political networks and provides them training for working in parliament as well as mentorship for those [...]

It is a privilege to respond to the Governor-General's address and to the extensive agenda of the Morrison coalition government. As the Governor-General referenced in his address, at the 2019 election more than 15 million Australians had their say about what they want from their government and their parliament over the next three years. Hardworking Australians made a simple and humble demand that their aspirations for their future be respected [...]

Maiden Speech – Senator Claire Chandler

First of all, I would like to congratulate you, Mr. President, on your re-election to your position in the 46th Parliament. The chair in which you now sit is one that has a proud history, and particularly a recent history of being occupied by fellow Tasmanians. While you don’t quite fit that moniker, given you hail from the great and neighbouring state of Victoria, I suppose I can accept that’s [...]
